My thoughts on the iPad

Currently, I don't see myself getting one anytime soon. I do however see how this revolutionary device can change computing as most people know it today. Is it a change for the better, yes most likely it is, but is it a change I am willing to make right now with this new way of computing still in its infancy? No, it is not.

The iPad is going to revolutionize the way people that aren't like me (lets call them "new worlders" as Steven Frank so aptly put it) use computers. Things are simpler and easy to learn on the iPad, which is a new world computer. I am an "old world" user, clinging on to file systems, desktop metaphors, flexible multi-tasking, mice and keyboards, windows and menu-bars, basically everything a computer is today. Eventually, old world computing will go away. It won't be in the next few years, but it will happen.

I will be very happy when it goes away too. Will I miss it? Probably. At least for a period of time. But what I won't miss is supporting old world computers and their users.

Apple has revolutionized the mobile phone industry with the iPhone, and I see no reason why they won't eventually revolutionize the computer industry with the iPad. It will just take a bit longer to do so.
